Over the past two hundred years, the U.S. has lost nearly 50% of all wetlands in the lower 48 states due to draining and development. While the U.S. has some of the best wetland mapping in the world, certain types of wetlands are missing from maps and datasets. Without understanding where these wetlands are across a landscape, states may struggle to fully account for the ecological and economic benefits these habitats provide, including flood mitigation, fire management, water quality improvements, wildlife habitat, and carbon storage.
This Blue Carbon Network webinar, hosted by The Pew Charitable Trusts, will highlight the Wetland Intrinsic Potential (WIP) Tool, an innovative technology developed by Washington-based researchers that combines satellite imagery, hydrology, elevation, and vegetation data to locate and assess wetlands that have historically been difficult to map.
